Using email notifications on DPM 2007 setup with a remote SQL server

There appears to be a bug in DPM 2007 (as of version 2.0.8111.0) where if you have installed DPM 2007 using a remote SQL server you cannot set an SMTP server for DPM to use to send out notifications. Upon trying to set the SQL server for the DPM application (In the DPM 2007 Administrator Console go to Action/Options…/SMTP Server) you will get the error message “DPM Setup is unable to update the report server configuration to configure e-mail settings. (ID: 3040)”:

Now, for sending out reports automatically, the SMTP server does need to be setup on the Reporting Server. However, to send out DPM Notifications (for job failures, restore notifications, critical failures etc), the SMTP server needs to be set in the DPM application (which you cant do through the GUI). However, there is a table in the DPM database that holds this information that you can manually update to accomplish this. Here is how:

  • Open up your DPM database in Management Studio (The name of the database is DPMDB)
  • Open the dbo.tbl_DLS_GlobalSetting table
  • Under the PropertyName column, find SmtpServerName and SmtpServerSenderAddress. Both of these will be blank.
  • Update SmtpServerName to your SMTP servers network name
  • Update SmtpServerSender Address to the sending email address. This needs to be a valid email address (DPM will verify this address).

This is all you need to do. Now, set the desired notifications and recipients under the DPM 2007 Administrator Console (Action/Options…/Notifications) and you will start receiving alerts.
